Nothing is more
exciting than going to the first race of the season; but I must Be
Crazy... Las Vegas, yes... Las Vegas.
"00"
Joe Ewing and I left last Tuesday at 5:30 p.m .
We drove 28 hours straight and spent the first night in Laughlin, NV.
Our trip was
smooth except we blew a trailer tire twenty miles outside of Laughlin.
Luckily we had a spare and had it fixed quickly.
Thursday morning, Joe
& I pulled into Las Vegas Motor Speedway. What a track, if you've
never been, you must
go, its a beautiful
track.
We
had 7 NSS cars from the Mid-West plus 6
from
the West Coast. Friday, the first pass of the season, the Drag'n Wag'n
went 10.16, not good. The air pressure was 27.58 and the computer showed
we were racing at 3,900 feet. Next run, we went 10.09, better, but not
good enough for our 10.00 Index. Friday night, after a great steak, I
spent the next three hours playing Craps and Blackjack. I arrived at the
track Saturday morning and the computer showed better weather conditions
and a tail-wind. The Wag'n went 10.02 at 132 MPH on the first run and
then 10.03 on the second; Now we are ready to race! Saturday night, I
went to bed early so I was ready for Sunday Morning.
Sunday, the weather changed again, more tail-wind and the
temperature was at 65°. We did not get a time run Sunday, so it was a
crap shoot on the 1st run. Round 1, I raced Bo Adams in his '64
Plymouth. I have found in the lanes, that Bo is a very experienced racer,
I had to be on my game. Luckily, I had a good light. Bo went 10.85
Breakout on a 11.00 Index, the Wag'n (with a tail-wind), went 9.97 at 137
MPH. My Win Light came on. Round 2, I ran Rich Berlisk in his '63
Plymouth. Rick ran a 10.61 on his 10.50 Index, I got by him at about the
1200 mark and pedaled to a 10.07. Round 3, I ran a '63 Plymouth and with
his Red Light, the Drag'n Wag'n was in the Finals. Final Round, I ran
Glenn Willett from Wyoming in his '64 Plymouth. I just had the pleasure
of meeting Glenn for the first time at this event, he is a good guy. His
Plymouth was the #2 Qualifier and was able to run right on the 10.50
Index. In the final, Glenn got a little quick on the tree, went red, and
handed the Wag'n the Win. Great way to start the season! After the final
round, we had pictures
taken
and it was a good feeling. Alot of people said how proud my Dad would be
if he was here watching the days events, maybe He was.
It was really nice for
our sponsors, TTI Exhaust and Indy Cylinder Head were in the Winner Circle
with me. Special thanks to Phil Painter, the event Promoter. He has
been on my to come to Vegas to race for 6 Years, I'm glad I went. Phil
puts on a First Class Event! Now, I will be getting ready for Bowling
Green April 19th-21st.

for photos from the event...

Bowling Green Race
Report:
This Weekend, it was
off to Bowling Green, KY to race at the 1st Chrysler Classic event of
the
year.
The morning
started out with an Earthquake in Southern Indiana right before I left.
It lasted 20 seconds or so and at a 5.2, it really
shook
my house; exciting way to start the morning! After a quick home
inspection, I left at 5 a.m. from Evansville,
lucky me... Bowling
Green is only 80 miles from my house so I
arrived early and got a great pit spot. The weather was great and the
Drag'n Wag'n went 9.75 at 137mph. The Barracuda went 10.23 at 130mph.
Friday night, I entered the Wag'n in the No
Box
Bracket Race. By the third round, I was down to only 7 cars... then
the rains came, so we split the money. Saturday came and so did more
rain. I got 3 runs in the Cuda, but only one
in the Wag'n, and because of more rain, the
class Run Offs were
cancelled. Sunday, the weather was perfect. We got two time runs
in Max Wedge & two in the Cuda. I got my Butt handed to me in the
1st round driving
the Cuda, I spun
the tires bad and ran a 10th off my Dial-In. I ran against defendi ng
Points Champion Fred Rader in the Wag'n. Fred got me on the tree, I
ran 9.8 on my 9.75 index, not a good way to
start
the season. But good news...
"00"
Joe Ewing met Mr. Rader in the finals and took the win.
Joe won this event last
year and came back to win it again,
Congrats to Joe!
Even though I lost in the first Rounds, I have to tell you, I had a great
time with my Racing Buddies! The Chrysler Classic Crew did a
great job, despite the
weather. I'll be back to Beech Bend in two weeks for NMCA... I'll do
better.

Bowling Green Race
Report:
Early
Saturday morning, "00" Joe & I left for the NMCA Race at Bowling Green.
We
arrived
at 8 a.m. and found a Huge Crowd at this race. We parked on the oval
track and prepared for time trials. On Friday night, the track had
gotten a lot of rain, forcing a late start on Saturday. I only got one
time run with the Wag'n at 9.81; I had put a New transmission and converter
in and was happy with the 1.37 60' Time. After a long stretch of down
time, race officials gave us two qualifying passes on Saturday. I
moved the wagon to the 10.00 Index. The first pass, I
went 9.90. On te Second pass, just past the 1/8th mile cone, the EVAC
Tube broke off the carb mount and shorted out the ignition system. The
car only went 10.58. This make me the #16 qualifier in a 23 car field.
Joe's Dodge ran poorly Saturday and was only able to muster a 10.59.
He changed to a new Max Wedge Intake which slowed his car down. Sunday
morning, we put on the old manifold and he went 10.40 and his opponent had a
Red Light. "00" Joe lost in the 3rd round to the Runner Up of the
event. I got beat in the 1st Round when I bent 9.97 on my 10.00 Index.
Skip Koester won the event in his Ford Thunderbolt, Congrats Skip! I'm
looking forward to the Columbus Chrysler Classic event in 2 Weeks!

Columbus Race Report:
Last
week was rough getting ready for this race. Wednesday night, we put
the transmission back in the Cuda. We found the U-Joint was bad and by
Thursday, I had chased one down. I wanted to leave for Columbus at
4p.m. Thursday, but it was 9:30 p.m. by the time I headed out of Evansville.
I
finally arrived at National Trails Raceway at 3:30 in the morning.
After 3 hours of shut-eye on the air mattress, I made a couple of 1/8 mile
runs in both cars. Central Ohio has had so much rain, that there is
water forcing its way up through the racetrack. On Saturday, after
some off and on showers, we made more time runs. The Wag'n was running
great and right on it's 10.00 index. The Barracuda is still having
traction issues. On one 1/4 mile run, the Cuda must have hit some
water and slid onto the centerline; Very Scary at 130 MPH. Several
other cars had the same issue, so the track went back to 1/8 Mile racing for
the rest of the weekend. Sunday came with sunny skies, but windy
conditions. 1st Round in the Wag'n, I ran Rick Nobach in his '63
Wagon. Rick pulled a Red Light and I went 6.394 on the 6.40 1/8 Mile
Index. 2nd Round, I ran my good friend Jim Guy in his White '64 Savoy.
Our lights were not great, but close. Jim went 6.99 on a 7.00 and I
went 6.396 on a 6.40 Index. Next I had Jeff Day, Jeff and I go way
back. Jeff is a great friend and a great racer! I took a slight
advantage on the tree, but the Wag'n had a rare loss of traction. I
went 6.43 on the 6.4 Index, Jeff was dead on at 7.005 on a 7.00 Index and
took the win. Next round, Jeff ran Fred Rader, the current points
leader. Jeff won, but at a high cost, water was running out of his
right header pipe and his day was over. In the finals, Ron Gordon in
his '64 Fury beat Ricky Shepard in his '62 Plymouth. I've got a few
weeks off until the Hot Rod Reunion in Bowling Green.

Beech Bend Race
Report:
Back
from a fun weekend in Bowling Green. The event is the NHRA Hot Rod
Reunion. If you have never been to this event, you must go! You
will see every kind of old race
car
possible. Also, the event is huge and completely fills the Beech Bend
Raceway property. Because of the large crowds, I took Joe's and my
Cars down to Bowling Green Wednesday evening. Early Thursday, I got
the car teched and went back to the Dealership to work Thursday and Friday.
Saturday morning, Joe & I headed back down to Bowling Green. When we
got there, we had 38 N/SS Cars in our Class! We got 2 time runs
Saturday. The Drag'n Wag'n went 9.89 & 9.94 in muggy air. After
our runs, 8 of us went to Toot's to eat dinner. This place has Great
Catfish! We went back to the track and watched the Cacklefest;
40 Dragsters idling at the same time at night, lots of flames and noise.
Sunday eliminations, Joe got beat in the third round. I was lucky
enough to take it to the final round. I ran Bob Mosher in his Ford.
Bob got me on the tree and took the win, Congrats to Bob! We had a
great time this weekend and look forward to this event next year. Time
to get ready for the Chrysler Classic Race in Pittsburgh!

Pittsburgh Race
Report:
Joe
and I left Evansville at 8p.m. Thursday evening. We drove all night
and arrived at the track at 6a.m. Friday, we got 2 time runs.
The Wag'n went 9.95 at 134 MPH. Our buddy Mike DeChicco "Mr.Aruba"
showed up with his '65 Dodge. Mike installed a 540" Wedge done by
Precision Machine in the spring. The new motor dyno'ed over 800 H.P.,
but has run poorly at the track. We took the Carbs from the Drag'n
Wag'n and put them on his Dodge; his his time improved by .2 of a second.
On Sunday, we put a second set of Carbs on his Dodge which yielded a 9.94 at
135 MPH in the thin Pittsburgh air... Mike is now a Happy Racer! Back
to the race; on Saturday, we got 2 more time runs and entered a Max Wedge /
Hemi Combo Saturday Evening. I installed a New set of Diamondback
Carbs on the Drag'n Wag'n. I was getting tuning in with the help of
Damon over the phone. My Speed picked up over 1 MPH, but the car was
lazy in the 60' with a little more tuning, these carbs are going to be Fast.
After 2 rounds Saturday Evening, the rains came and we split the money.
Sunday, we got one time run and I went 9.99. I put my old carbs on for
first round, the Wag'n picked up the front end and I had a Red Light.
"OO" Joe went 10.53 on his 10.50 Index and was also out in Round One, Ouch!
We quickly loaded up and after a 10 Hour pull back home, I was in bed at 11
p.m. I talked to Jeff Day at about 5p.m., he had just beat Jeff
Millward in the Final Round, CONGRATS to Both Jeff's, GOOD JOB! Even
though Joe and I got beat in the 1st Round, we had a Great Time. We
had 36 Max Wedge Cars and 46 Entered the Max
Wedge / Hemi Combo Saturday night. I'm not racing for 3 weeks, so its
time for some maintenance on the Drag'n Wag'n. We are looking forward
to our Santa Clothes Club CRUISE-IN at the Dealership on July 5th 6-10
p.m.
We should have 300+ Show Cars and a few thousand people. We have a
goal to raise $5,000 for The Santa Clothes Club here in Evansville.
Also, don't forget about the Chrysler Classic in Martin Michigan July 19th &
20th. Max Wedge on Saturday and N/SS on Sunday with all makes welcome
(Chevy, Ford, etc...) $1,500 to WIN on Both Days (N/SS NA Rules
Apply).
